Privacy Policy

Your family's trust is everything. This page explains, in plain language, what information we collect, why we collect it, and the choices you have. Last updated: July 19, 2026.

Who We Are

WordSprout (the "Site", "we", or "us") is a free learning tool that helps young children practice sight words through flashcards, games, and printable worksheets. The Site is operated by WordSprout and is available at www.sightwordskid.org. This policy applies to the Site and our optional email reminders. By using WordSprout, you agree to the practices described here.

Information We Collect

  • Account information. When a parent or teacher signs up, we collect a name and email address, plus a password (stored only as an irreversible hash). If you sign in with Google, we receive the name and email from your Google account.
  • Student profiles. Parents and teachers create profiles for the children they supervise — for example a nickname, an avatar, and a grade level. Children do not create their own accounts or enter personal details themselves.
  • Learning and game progress. We store progress such as which words a student has practiced, scores, streaks, and achievements so learning can pick up where it left off. If you use classroom tools, we also store classroom membership, assigned word lists, and assignment results.
  • Membership and billing records. If optional billing is enabled and you choose a paid plan, Stripe processes your payment details. We receive the plan, subscription status, billing-period dates, and Stripe identifiers needed to manage access; WordSprout does not store your full card number.
  • Feedback and messages. If you contact us, we keep your name, email, and message. We log an anonymized identifier derived from your IP address (never the raw address) and your browser type to help prevent abuse.
  • Usage and technical data. We use Google Analytics to understand aggregate traffic patterns (see Cookies and Third-Party Services below).

How We Use Information

We use the information above to:

  • Provide and personalize the learning experience for each student profile.
  • Run classrooms, assignments, membership access, and billing support you request.
  • Send optional review-reminder emails (only if you keep them turned on).
  • Respond to your questions, feedback, and support requests.
  • Improve our content, games, and features based on aggregate usage trends.
  • Detect and prevent fraud or abuse of the service.

We never sell your personal information.

Children's Privacy (COPPA)

WordSprout is directed to children under 13, so we follow the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The most important things to know:

  • Parents are in control. Accounts are created and managed by a parent or teacher. Children do not sign up themselves, and we do not knowingly collect personal information directly from a child.
  • Minimum data only.We collect only what is needed to run the service — and we never sell children's data.
  • No ads in child learning areas. Ad code is not loaded in games, daily practice, learner dashboards, or printable builders. Adult-directed public pages may contain clearly labeled ads.
  • Your parental rights.A parent may review, export, or permanently delete a learner's profile and data at any time in Account & Privacy, or contact us for help.

Cookies & Local Storage

Cookies are small files stored on your device. We use them to:

  • Keep you signed in during a session (authentication).
  • Measure aggregate traffic through Google Analytics.
  • Support the app-like experience when WordSprout is installed to a home screen.

You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings. Note that turning off some cookies may affect sign-in and site features.

Third-Party Services

We rely on a small number of trusted providers. Each has its own privacy practices.

Google Analytics

Understand how visitors use the site so we can improve it.

Data involved: Aggregated usage metrics, approximate region, and device/browser details. Uses cookies.

Google AdSense

Displays ads that help keep WordSprout free for families.

Data involved: Ad code is limited to adult-directed public pages such as teacher resources. It is not loaded in games, practice, learner dashboards, or printable builders.

Supabase

Hosts the database where your account, student profiles, and progress are stored.

Data involved: The account, student, progress, and feedback records you create.

Resend

Delivers transactional emails such as optional review reminders.

Data involved: Your email address.

Stripe

Processes payments and billing management only when optional billing is enabled.

Data involved: If you use a paid plan, Stripe receives payment and billing details. WordSprout stores only Stripe customer/subscription identifiers, plan, status, and billing-period dates—not full card numbers.

Google Sign-In

Optional faster sign-in using your existing Google account.

Data involved: The name and email associated with your Google account.

Advertising & Your Choices

We may use Google AdSense on clearly adult-directed public pages such as teacher resources. Ad code is not loaded on games, daily practice, learner dashboards, account pages, or printable builders. Ads are labeled "Advertisement" and kept separate from navigation, play controls, and download buttons.

You can manage ads and your choices:

  • Adjust personalized ads in Google's Ads Settings or install Google's opt-out browser add-on.
  • Learn more in Google's advertising policy.

Email Communications

If you opt in, we may send occasional review-reminder emails to help your child keep their streak. You can turn these off at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email or in your account settings, and we will stop right away.

Data Security

We use reasonable safeguards to protect your information: passwords are stored only as a one-way hash, access to our database is restricted to the service, and we never store raw IP addresses. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your data as if it were our own family's.

Your Rights

You can access settings, download a machine-readable copy, permanently delete an individual learner, or permanently delete the full account from Account & Privacy. You may also contact us for correction requests or rights available in your region.

Data Retention

We keep your information only as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service. When you delete an account, the associated profiles and progress are removed as well, and any active subscription is canceled before deletion. Payment processors may retain limited transaction records where required for fraud prevention, tax, accounting, or other legal obligations.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the service evolves. When we do, we will revise the "last updated" date at the top. Material changes will be highlighted on the Site or sent by email where appropriate.
