Privacy Policy

Your family's trust is everything. This page explains, in plain language, what information we collect, why we collect it, and the choices you have. Last updated: June 16, 2026.

Who We Are

WordSprout (the "Site", "we", or "us") is a free learning tool that helps young children practice sight words through flashcards, games, and printable worksheets. The Site is operated by WordSprout and is available at www.sightwordskid.org. This policy applies to the Site and our optional email reminders. By using WordSprout, you agree to the practices described here.

Information We Collect

  • Account information. When a parent or teacher signs up, we collect a name and email address, plus a password (stored only as an irreversible hash). If you sign in with Google, we receive the name and email from your Google account.
  • Student profiles. Parents and teachers create profiles for the children they supervise — for example a nickname, an avatar, and a grade level. Children do not create their own accounts or enter personal details themselves.
  • Learning and game progress. We store progress such as which words a student has practiced, scores, streaks, and achievements so learning can pick up where it left off.
  • Feedback and messages. If you contact us, we keep your name, email, and message. We log an anonymized identifier derived from your IP address (never the raw address) and your browser type to help prevent abuse.
  • Usage and technical data. We use Google Analytics to understand aggregate traffic patterns (see Cookies and Third-Party Services below).

How We Use Information

We use the information above to:

  • Provide and personalize the learning experience for each student profile.
  • Send optional review-reminder emails (only if you keep them turned on).
  • Respond to your questions, feedback, and support requests.
  • Improve our content, games, and features based on aggregate usage trends.
  • Detect and prevent fraud or abuse of the service.

We never sell your personal information.

Children's Privacy (COPPA)

WordSprout is directed to children under 13, so we follow the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The most important things to know:

  • Parents are in control. Accounts are created and managed by a parent or teacher. Children do not sign up themselves, and we do not knowingly collect personal information directly from a child.
  • Minimum data only.We collect only what is needed to run the service — and we never sell children's data.
  • No personalized ads for kids. Our children-facing pages are treated as "made for kids," which means Google serves contextual (non-personalized) ads only and does not build an ad profile based on a child's activity.
  • Your parental rights.A parent may review, update, or delete their child's profile and data at any time, or ask us to stop collecting further data. Just contact us and we will respond promptly.

Cookies & Local Storage

Cookies are small files stored on your device. We use them to:

  • Keep you signed in during a session (authentication).
  • Measure aggregate traffic through Google Analytics.
  • Support the app-like experience when WordSprout is installed to a home screen.

You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings. Note that turning off some cookies may affect sign-in and site features.

Third-Party Services

We rely on a small number of trusted providers. Each has its own privacy practices.

Google Analytics

Understand how visitors use the site so we can improve it.

Data involved: Aggregated usage metrics, approximate region, and device/browser details. Uses cookies.

Google AdSense

Displays ads that help keep WordSprout free for families.

Data involved: Our children-facing pages are treated as made for kids, so Google serves contextual (non-personalized) ads only. Limited cookies may be used for ad frequency capping and fraud prevention.

Supabase

Hosts the database where your account, student profiles, and progress are stored.

Data involved: The account, student, progress, and feedback records you create.

Resend

Delivers transactional emails such as optional review reminders.

Data involved: Your email address.

Google Sign-In

Optional faster sign-in using your existing Google account.

Data involved: The name and email associated with your Google account.

Advertising & Your Choices

We use Google AdSense to display ads so the core learning tools stay free. To keep the experience safe for young learners, ads are shown only on parent-, teacher-, and content-facing pages — never inside the games children play — and children-facing pages are marked as made for kids so that ads are contextual rather than personalized.

You can manage ads and your choices:

  • Adjust personalized ads in Google's Ads Settings or install Google's opt-out browser add-on.
  • Learn more in Google's advertising policy.

Email Communications

If you opt in, we may send occasional review-reminder emails to help your child keep their streak. You can turn these off at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email or in your account settings, and we will stop right away.

Data Security

We use reasonable safeguards to protect your information: passwords are stored only as a one-way hash, access to our database is restricted to the service, and we never store raw IP addresses. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your data as if it were our own family's.

Your Rights

You may ask to access, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you or your child, or to opt out of marketing emails. If you live in California, the EU, the UK, or another region with data-protection laws, you may have additional rights. To exercise any of these, contact us and we will respond within a reasonable timeframe.

Data Retention

We keep your information only as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service. When you delete an account, the associated profiles and progress are removed as well.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the service evolves. When we do, we will revise the "last updated" date at the top. Material changes will be highlighted on the Site or sent by email where appropriate.
